A horrible Vacation

My mother always used to tell me that I walked around as if I was invincible, as if nothing could ever hurt me. She said one day, if I wasn't careful, I might just learn how fragile I am. Well, I was mugged today and I must say I sure as hell don't feel invincible anymore.

It was my friends birthday and I was on my way to meet him in Sheepshead bay (Brooklyn). I got of the b82 at Nostrand and kings highway around 12:30 PM and crossed the street to catch the b44. As I saw the bus pull up it stopped shorter than where it normally would due to a van. As I began walking towards it I felt a sudden tug on my bag and the next thing I know I feel someone punch the side of my head causing me to fall.

"Let go of the ****ing bag" one of the girls screamed at me. Instinctively I wrapped my wrist around the bag. Another girl began grabbing at my wristlet which she broke off of the strap. Both of them began punching me repeatedly in the back and side of my head, and all the while I was screaming "HELP, I'm being mugged, call 911!"

20 or so people were watching me get mugged by these two rather large girls but no one helped and jumped in. I started punching back while I hung onto my laptop bag the entire act went on for about 2-3 minutes and by the end of it a rather large crowd had formed. I never let go of my laptop- I'm typing on it right now actually- but I did lose a total of $51. I would have lost more if it wasn't for one person who stood out from the crowd.

The two girls finally ran away when a man got out of his car and came running to the scene. Something apparently told him one tiny little white girl being punched repeatedly by two fat girls in their mid to late twenties was probably a bad thing. He caught one of the girls, the one who was grabbing my bag, and wouldn't let her leave the scene. After he stepped up everyone else grabbed their phones and began calling 911.

Soon the cops came and both girls were arrested I got my wallet back with everything in it- minus $51. So now I'm covered in bruises and cuts and extraordinarily sore. Come friday I have to go to court to make sure they actually get some time in jail, but I'm just amazed at how no one would help me. How I was mugged in broad day light and no one would help me when I was screaming help, when I was being pummeled.

Its funny, because I remember in my psychology class we learned that if many people are present people are less likely to act because they'll just assume someone else can do it. Well, don't just assume someone else can do it because you actually can do something. I know some people may say I should have just given them my stuff and not fault back, but I would be damned if I didn't fight back. Don't let people just push you around, and more importantly don't let others be pushed around.

Todays words are simple: Evil wins when good does nothing...

  2. I'm fine, but the mugging didn't happen anywhere near Berkeley College. It happened in Brooklyn which is a fair distance away. Which campus are you going to?

  4. I go to the manhattan campus too! I switch between midtown and downtown though it works so you can best optimize your schedule. Thank you for the complement, I try.
